How to prepare for CompTIA Security+
Today I want to share my plan on how to prepare for the CompTIA Security+ exam. I don’t have much experience in this field, and I am just starting up, so take my advice with a grain of salt.
Buy a book
Seriously, buy a study guide Security+ from CompTIA. I bought a fresh copy, but find it in second-hand ads if you are into saving and being resourceful. The only drawback is that you don’t get a 10 percent voucher.
Make notes
I started my journey by reading a book. I am done with the first chapter. After that, I made a lot of notes on my Obsidian app. Unfortunately, notes were never a part of my learning toolkit because I found note-taking a bit tedious. With the Obsidian app, things changed. I can build my knowledge library!
Answers questions
Each end of a chapter has a section with questions to solidify your understanding. Always try to answer it. But, please don’t skip it. It will help you to test yourself and see any knowledge gaps.
Supplement your studies
The study guide is just one tool to learn Cybersecurity, but there is plenty of other tools to solidify your knowledge. For example, a 12.99 euro course from Udemy can be a great way to learn the same topic and broaden your understanding. The same goes for electronic flashcards or apps.
Schedule the exam
There are two ways of approaching it. First, you can book it asap and impose some deadline in your head. Second, the early schedule will bring focus and clarity to your actions or prepare a bit, see where you are at, and schedule it. I am leaning towards a second option. Since I started now, I will book it around December if all goes well with the preparations.
Conclusion
In this article, I covered my strategy and preparation plan. Remember, each person has its learning style. So take it with a grain of salt. Take care and good luck on your journey.
