This Is How They Tell Me The World Ends
Last week I started reading a book about cyberwarfare titled “This Is How They Tell Me The World Ends” by Nicole Perlroth. I chose to read this book thanks to the recommendation in the cybersecurity subreddit. It also has that gloomy title that captures your attention.
The book covers multiple topics, such as zero-day vulnerabilities, how governments worldwide are trying to find an edge in the cyber world, and people who make it a reality. It is a scary read when you think about the implications of these things.
Before reading this book, I didn’t know much about the author. However, it makes sense why her book is such a gem. As stated in New York Times short bio, “Nicole Perlroth covers cybersecurity and digital espionage for The New York Times. She has covered Russian hacks of nuclear plants, airports, and elections, North Korea’s cyberattacks against movie studios, banks and hospitals, Iranian attacks on oil companies, banks and the Trump campaign and hundreds of Chinese cyberattacks, including a months-long hack of The Times. She is the author of the New York Times bestselling book “This Is How They Tell Me The World Ends,” about the global cyber arms race. The book, and several of her Times articles, have been optioned for television.”
The book author has this fantastic ability to hook you in from the first chapter. I don’t want to spoil a story, but it starts innocently. Like a frog boiling in water, the story reaches a left turn quite fast. If you have been following cybersecurity news, you will find many stories in the book.
I am halfway done with the book but already raving about its greatness. Everyone needs to read it. It doesn’t matter if you are a coder, a tech person, or just a curious person interested in various things. Everybody should know about the future and how malicious actors can destroy our beautiful world.
